Ed Book was first elected to the Gainesville City Commission in November 2022.
Education - Obtained Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences as a psychology major in 1984 and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership through the University of Florida in 2003.
Over a 40 year span in north central Florida, he has been involved in many service and non-profit efforts, and community and professional organizations locally, throughout Florida, and nationally. These include difference-making organizations such as Keep Alachua County Beautiful, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the United Way. He remains a very active long-term member of Rotary holding many previous club and district positions.
In November 2025, Commissioner Book retired following 14 years of employment at Santa Fe College where he was the chief of police and emergency manager. He retired previously from the Gainesville Police Department as district commander and captain after a 26 ½ year career.
His immediate family includes wife Lori, a retired public-school teacher, son Daniel and daughter Alexandra.
