The Yes-in-God’s-Backyard (YIGBY) initiative is a Florida legislative framework that invites faith-based organizations to become active partners in expanding affordable housing. Through YIGBY, local governments may authorize housing developments on property owned by religious institutions, allowing churches to translate mission into measurable community impact while preserving local planning authority.

The City of Gainesville Planning Department intends to recognize YIGBY pursuant to Section 7(e) of the YIGBY Church Bill. Projects that comply with applicable land development regulations may qualify for administrative approval. Faith-based organizations are encouraged to begin the process by requesting a First Step Meeting with the Planning Department to discuss feasibility, requirements, and next steps.
