The City of Gainesville takes care of many parks. Some have active recreation, like playgrounds, sports fields and pools. Others have passive recreation, like hiking, biking and watching wildlife.

Approximately 3,200 acres of park land are set aside for nature. The city sets aside these areas for conservation and outdoor activities. They include:

  • Nature trails
  • Nature centers
  • Important natural areas

The care each park receives depends on its natural features. Work may include:

  • Controlled burns
  • Removing invasive plants
  • Restoring habitats
  • Managing wildlife
  • Protecting water sources
  • Managing public use

The Natural Resource Management team is part of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. The team manages Gainesville’s nature parks and protects sensitive lands. They work to restore native plants and animals. They also provide chances for environmental education and nature-based recreation.

Morningside Nature Center Plan

The city is writing 10-year plans for nature parks. The first plan is for Morningside Nature Center, a 416-acre park on the east side of the city. This park is home to fire-dependent habitats with many plants and animals.

Public Workshop

The city will hold a workshop to review the draft plan for Morningside Nature Center. The meeting will have a short talk followed by time for questions and feedback.
