Program Information

The City of Gainesville’s Guard Start Program is designed to introduce youth to lifeguarding and prepare them for future employment with the city. Participants will build the swimming strength, rescue awareness, and confidence needed to succeed in a lifeguard certification course. Through skill development, teamwork, and water safety training, they’ll get a first-hand look at what it means to work as a lifeguard. Guard Start is the first step on the pathway toward lifeguard certification—and potentially joining the city’s lifeguard team.

Pre-requisite swim test:

  • 100 yard swim
  • 1-minute unaided float/tread

All participants should bring their snacks, goggles, sunscreen, tennis shoes, socks, towel and swimsuit.

Denim shorts or cut-offs are not allowed to be worn in the water.

Due to the nature of the program, it is required that all female participants wear a one-piece swimsuit.
