Street Sweeping

The City of Gainesville maintains over 800 lane miles of paved roadway, including 300 miles of roadways with curbs and gutters. Curb and guttered streets are the focus of street sweeping activities in order to remove debris that could cause flooding by plugging storm drains. City streets are maintained by four street sweepers and two dump trucks. Street sweeping activity is responsible for removing approximately 15,000 cubic yards of debris from our roadways annually.

Frequency of Street Sweeping

  • Downtown area: Swept early in the morning every Monday throughout the year. Additionally, the downtown area around the Plaza and NE First Street is swept prior to special events such as the annual Downtown Festival & Arts Show and Homecoming Parade. Also, the NW Fifth Avenue and Sixth Street area by Santa Fe College is swept prior to the annual 5th Avenue Arts Festival.
  • Major arterial and collector roads: Swept once every four weeks or as needed.
  • Residential areas: Residential areas of the city are swept every four-six weeks, which averages about nine times annually.

When is my street scheduled to be swept?

The entire city is swept monthly by zones which rotate around the trash pick-up schedule.  Interruptions of the zone schedule may be caused by an emergency, such as inclement weather conditions or equipment repairs.

Why was my street missed?

Occasionally, equipment breakdown, holidays and cars parked in the right-of-way may force the sweeper to miss an assigned area. If a street is missed, it will be swept during the next scheduled pass. Streets without curbs and gutters are not swept.
