Project Description:

The project consisted of a 10-foot-wide asphalt multiuse trail along the north side NE 31st Avenue from NE 15th Street to NE Waldo Road. Construction began in October and completed in June 2026. R.E. Arnold Construction, Inc. was awarded the contract for these improvements through a competitive bidding process for a total of $1,499,900.

Project Description: 

This project consisted of the replacement of the aging 1960s-era ponds with a modern and flexible public plaza featuring new green spaces, seating, landscaping and improved lighting. This project also included enhancements to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Garden and Sister Cities Monument Garden. 

Construction of the improved City Hall Plaza began in October 2025 and wrapped up in April 2026 with an official ribbon cutting ceremony held in May 2026. The project was partially funded by Wild Spaces & Public Places (WSPP), covering a little more than one-third of the total cost. Specifically, WSPP's portion was $717,983.38 out of the $1,833,920.38 total construction cost.

Project Description:

This project consisted of a series of improvements to Tom Petty Park, located at 51 NE 16th Ave. The improvements included the addition of eight dedicated pickleball courts, new seating areas, parking lot lighting, a new restroom, a concessions and storage building and a pedestrian entrance from the NE 16th Ave. crosswalk to Tom Petty Park. The park also features new landscaping, a stormwater pond and a Bee City Gainesville pollinator garden. Additionally, the project rerouted the existing multipurpose trail to enhance ADA accessibility and improve landscaping and stormwater management onsite.

D.E. Scorpio Corporation was awarded the contract for the pickleball improvements through a competitive bidding process for a total of $1,967,007. The new restroom, concessions and storage building will be constructed by D.E. Scorpio Corporation at a cost of $718,300.

Project Description: 

This project consisted of upgrades at Morningside Nature Center's Living History Farm located at 3540 E. University Avenue. The  improvements included the installation of new livestock pens, lean-to structures, a new grazing area and utility upgrades. Construction began in June 2025 and completed in November 2025. Project Description:

This project consisted of the renovation of the historic elevator at the Hippodrome Theatre — a historic building that previously served as a post office and a federal courthouse — located at 25 SE 2nd Place. Project Description:

This project consisted of the renovation of the historic awning on the southeast corner of the Hippodrome Theatre, a historic building that previously served as a post office and a federal courthouse — located at 25 SE 2nd Place. The improvements included removal of the roof membrane to expose damaged decking, removal and replacement of damaged plywood decking and framing lumber, installation of a new modified torch base sheet and cap sheet tied into the existing roof, installation of TREMCO base coat and embedded fabric on all seams and installation of TREMCO topcoat on the entire roof. This project consisted of the resurfacing of the track as well as repair and reseeding of the infield at Fred Cone Park located at 2801 E. This project consisted of the construction of sidewalk improvements at T.B. McPherson Recreation Complex, located at 1717 SE 15th St., and at Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Center, located at 1500 NW 45^th Ave. Construction Genes, LLC facilitated both projects with respective construction project costs of $14,922 and $11,696. Completed in April 2025, these projects included the replacement of broken sidewalk and concrete grinding to improve universal park access.

Project Description:

This project consists of the installation of 37 wayfinding and informational signs along the City of Gainesville's network of multiuse paths. The signage set features a range of sign types color-coded by trail: 

• Mile Zero Trail Map: Situated at the corner of SW Sixth St. and Depot Ave., the Mile Zero Trail Map charts trails, city parks and offers etiquette guidelines for trail use. 
• Directional Signs: Signs indicate the distance to upcoming points of interest. 
• Vicinity Maps: Maps at strategic points along the trails show nearby points of interest, connecting trails and etiquette guidelines for trail use. 
• Mile Markers: Signs indicate the distance from the mile zero marker.

Department of Transportation staff collaborated with the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Board on the signage suite's design, content and trail etiquette guidelines. In-house Wild Spaces & Public Places staff designed the signs while Clear Image Signs, LLC, a local business was awarded the production and installation contract through a competitive procurement process. The installation lasted approximately one month from February 2025 to March 2025 for a total cost of $29,923.95.

This project consisted of repairs to the boardwalk at Alfred A. Ring Nature Park, located at 1801 NW 23rd Blvd. The repairs began in November 2024 and wrapped up in February 2025. For ten sections of the boardwalk, the repairs included replacement of all walking surfaces and handrails. Project Description:

This project consisted of renovations at Duval Nature Park, located at 610 NE 24th Street, spanning from February 2025 to June 2025. Enhancements ranged from ADA accessibility upgrades to new signage:  

• An ADA walking trail around the existing stormwater pond at the eastern end of the park
• A new pedestrian entrance
• A new grill and water fountain
• Stormwater improvements at the northwest corner of the park
• A designated asphalt parking area, including bicycle parking, at the entrance on NE 24th Street
• A new playground
• New signage throughout the park

AKEA, Inc. was awarded a $237,000 contract through a competitive bidding process to complete ADA-acessible walking trail construction, pedestrian entrance and parking area improvements, stormwater enhancements, as well as the installation of a grill and water fountain. Kompan, Inc. received a $79,743 contract for the design and installation of the playground. Gaston's Tree Service provided site preparation services in the playground area, including underbrush clearing, canopy lifting, removal of three trees and debris removal, for a total cost of $4,825. Clear Image Signs produced and delivered new park signage for $1,302.

Project Description:

This project consisted of major renovations at Forest Park (renamed Abby Wambach Park in 2024), located at 4501 SW 20th Ave. The renovations began in February and completed on Sept. 23, 2023. The improvements to the existing soccer fields included improved field drainage, field lighting, addition of a two-thirds-sized soccer field, turf replacement, irrigation modifications, 12 new shade structures and 30 new bleachers. Additional improvements to the park included pickleball and basketball court surfacing, the creation of small and large off-leash dog parks with amenities, a new pavilion, two competition-quality sand volleyball courts, parking lot lighting, and seven water fountains equipped with water bottle fillers. 

Blackwater Construction Services, LLC, a small, local business, served as the general contractor for the project for a cost of $2,666,877. NGU Sports Lighting, LLC provided the sports lighting for the park for a cost of $890,000. To support the renovation of the park, the Florida Legislature awarded Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places program a $200,000 Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) matching grant.

This project consisted of renovation of the cinema and remodeling of the restrooms at the Hippodrome Theatre, located at 25 SE 2nd Place. Project Description: 

As a part of the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department’s 352walls initiative, Haitian American artist Mwanel Pierre-Louis, AKA One L, created a mural at the front entrance of the community center, paying tribute to Clarence R. A fence was installed around the stormwater pond at Clarence R. Kelly Park in July. The work was performed by Hercules Fence Company, Inc. and the construction project cost was $9,850. 

Installation of lighting at Clarence R. Kelly Park, located at 1701 NE 8th Avenue, began in late August and completed in September. The new lighting allows basketball players to enjoy the park’s basketball court until 10 p.m. Bolt Electric Contractors, Inc., a local small business, served as the contractor for the project. Construction of the new Clarence R. Kelly Community Center and Park, completed in May of 2022. Improvements included the construction of a new 3,800 SF community center and neighborhood park. The park features a new playground, adult fitness equipment, a full-sized lighted basketball court, a fenced community garden and much more. This project consisted of improvements to Albert "Ray" Massey Park, located at 1001 NW 34th St. Completed in November 2020, the project included various improvements to Field 1 and 2 of the park's baseball fields: field regrading, new "performance" turf, reconstruction of the scorer's platform ramp, a new ADA-accessible viewing area over Field 1 and erosion stabilization measures. This project consisted of renovations to Northside Park, located at 5701 NW 34th Blvd. Completed in 2020, the improvements included the addition of 40 parking spaces, a new playground and construction of the "Generations Play Zone", a new multi-generational play area. Project Description:

This project consisted of the installation of new shade structures over the bleachers at Fred Cone Park, located at 2841 E. University Ave. Installed in June 2019, the new canopy offers shaded seating for sports spectators and spans the full length of the bleachers, which can accommodate up to 360 people. USA Shade Fabric Structures served as the contractor and the project cost was $75,275.

Project Description:

This project consisted of improvements to Green Acres Park, located at 643 SW 40th St. Completed in May 2019, the improvements included a new playground, pavilion, picnic tables and benches, new adult outdoor fitness equipment and a sidewalk connecting all of the park amenities.

Project Description:

This project consisted of a clean-up day for Barbara Higgins Park, that took place on June 7, 2019, in partnership with Lowe's and Neighborhood Housing Development Corporation. The project involved the installation of a new benches, tables, a grill and fresh mulch for the playground. The project cost was $9,845.

This project consisted of safety and efficiency upgrades to the Hippodrome Theatre, located at 25 SE 2nd Place. The improvements included the replacement of the emergency communication system, upgrading of the lighting to LED, replacement of the box office window, replacement of the second floor handrails and repair of the handicap ramp and exit tower railings. The project cost was $51,509.

This project consisted of various renovations to the A. Quinn Jones Museum, located at 1108 NW 7th Ave. The improvements included the renovation of the exterior storage, installation of a security system on both buildings and fabrication of traveling and permanent exhibits. This project consisted of renovations to the Rosa B. Williams Center, located at 524 NW 1st St. The improvements included an interior renovation to include replacing the ceiling, doors and flooring, a signage update, storage expansion, and replacement of interior and exterior lighting.

This project consisted of improvements to Ironwood Golf Course, located at 2100 NE 39th Ave. The improvements included drainage improvements to the fairways, addition of equipment storage areas, installation of a new restroom on the front nine, resealing of the parking lot, cleaning of the course ditches and ponds, repair of the cart paths, replacement of banquet room furnishings, lighting and carpet upgrades. The project cost was $76,899.

Project Description: 

This project consisted of multiple improvements to Lincoln Park, located at 924 SE 15th St. The improvements included field grading and the installation of new bases, a home place and pitching rubber. Completed during the spring break week in 2018, the project was completed by city staff.

Project Description:

This project consisted of the installation of shade structures over playground equipment and other park amenities at ten parks in the City of Gainesville. The last shade structure installation wrapped up in February 2018. Shade structures were installed at the following parks and sites:

This project consisted of the installation of geothermal heating and cooling pumps at the H. Spurgeon Westside Pool, located at 1001 NW 31st Dr. Completed in September 2018, the project installation in conjunction with solar blankets allow the pool to remain open all year long. The project cost was $329,448.
