Curbside collection days changing Oct. 5 for many households

Beginning Monday, Oct. 5, approximately 65% of Gainesville households will have a new curbside collection day as the City of Gainesville transitions to a new residential solid waste collection contract.

New GFR fire engine arrives at Station 1

City leaders invite area neighbors to attend a dedication ceremony at GFR Station 1 this Thursday for for its newest firetruck, Engine 1. It replaces one at the station which has averaged nearly 2,000 calls annually over five years. Engine 1 is capable of carrying 750 gallons of water and is equipped with specialized tools and equipment to support rapid intervention during emergency incidents.

GPD and UFPD partner on Midtown public safety detail

The Midtown detail is deployed on dates and times when the agencies anticipate elevated levels of activity. By bringing GPD and UFPD officers together in a shared assignment, the detail combines personnel, information and experience from both agencies in one of Gainesville’s most active student-centered areas.

Choice Neighborhood Initiative

In September 2023, the City of Gainesville and the Gainesville Housing Authority (GHA) were awarded a $500,000 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This grant will be used to create a plan to redevelop and revitalize neighborhoods in east Gainesville.

The Art of Death: Plein air painting at Evergreen Cemetery

Evergreen Cemetery is hosting a plein air art event. Artists will capture the natural beauty of Evergreen Cemetery starting on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. through Sunday, Oct. 18 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. An art reception will be hosted from 5-8p.m. on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31 where original works of art will be available for purchase.
