Gainesville Fire Rescue hosts signing ceremony

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2023) – They stood tall and proud – and ready to take the next steps in becoming Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) first responders for the City of Gainesville.
At GFR’s second annual signing ceremony Aug. 4, the 2023 class of candidates officially committed to serving the community before family, friends and a large crowd gathered at the City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center.
“We are recognizing these fine, young men tonight as they begin their service to our community. And as I look out into the stands, I see how they’re inspiring all the young faces out there,” said GFR Fire Chief Joseph Dixon.
GFR Capt. Conrade Irving first proposed the idea to recognize future first responders with a signing-day event modeled after those for athletes who commit to sports teams.
“We are honoring these young men who have chosen to be givers, and give back to our community,” said Irving. Then he read aloud the Oath Appointment before each candidate was individually called forward to sign the oath alongside family.
“I do solemnly swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States, the laws of the State of Florida, and the Codes and Ordinances of the City of Gainesville. I will conduct myself in a professional manner in all circumstances and will dedicate my best efforts to the saving of lives and preservation of property. I commit, without reservation, to perform with dedication and courage, accepting the risks of my profession, for the greater good of my citizens, my community, and my fellow firefighters,” read Irving.
The 14 candidates each also accepted a conditional offer of employment from the City which will sponsor their training at Florida State Fire College in Ocala. Future employment is contingent upon each candidate earning firefighter certification and successfully completing Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training.
“I’m looking forward to going to Fire College and am excited to use my skills to serve the community,” said Joel Burgett, a candidate who first met Irving in 2022 during a CPR course.
The candidates were originally selected by GFR based on National Testing Network scores, performance testing and individual interviews. Following certification, the candidates will complete a 7-week orientation at GFR to demonstrate proficiency before joining fellow firefighters in response to emergency calls.

El Cuerpo de Bomberos de Gainesville celebra la ceremonia de firma de los futuros primeros intervinientes
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (14 de agosto de 2023) - Se mantuvieron erguidos y orgullosos - y listos para dar los próximos pasos para convertirse en los primeros socorristas del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Gainesville (GFR) para la Ciudad de Gainesville.
En la segunda ceremonia anual del día de la firma del GFR, el 4 de agosto, la clase 2023 de candidatos se comprometió oficialmente a servir a la comunidad ante familiares, amigos y una gran multitud reunida en el Centro Multiuso Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Estamos reconociendo a estos excelentes jóvenes esta noche cuando comienzan su servicio a nuestra comunidad. Y cuando miro a las gradas, veo cómo están inspirando a todos los rostros jóvenes que hay ahí fuera", dijo el Jefe de Bomberos de GFR, Joseph Dixon.
El Capitán de GFR Conrade Irving fue el primero en proponer la idea de reconocer a los futuros primeros intervinientes con una ceremonia inspirada en las de los atletas que se comprometen con equipos deportivos.
"Estamos honrando a estos jóvenes que han elegido ser generosos y retribuir a nuestra comunidad", dijo Irving. A continuación, leyó en voz alta el Juramento de Compromiso antes de que cada candidato fuera llamado individualmente a pasar al frente para firmar el juramento junto a su familia:
"Juro solemnemente defender la Constitución de los Estados Unidos, las leyes del Estado de Florida y los Códigos y Ordenanzas de la Ciudad de Gainesville. Me comportaré de manera profesional en todas las circunstancias y dedicaré mis mejores esfuerzos a salvar vidas y preservar la propiedad. Me comprometo, sin reservas, a actuar con dedicación y valentía, aceptando los riesgos de mi profesión, por el bien de mis ciudadanos, mi comunidad y mis compañeros bomberos", leyó Irving.
Cada uno de los 14 candidatos también aceptó una oferta de empleo condicional de la Ciudad, que patrocinará su formación en la Escuela de Bomberos del Estado de Florida en Ocala. El empleo futuro depende de que cada candidato obtenga la certificación de bombero y completen con éxito la capacitación de Técnico en Emergencias Médicas (EMT).
"Tengo muchas ganas de ir a la Escuela de Bomberos y estoy ansioso por usar mis habilidades para servir a la comunidad", dijo Joel Burgett, un candidato que conoció a Irving en 2022 durante un curso de primeros auxilios.
Los candidatos fueron seleccionados originalmente por la GFR basándose en las puntuaciones de la National Testing Network, pruebas de rendimiento y entrevistas individuales. Tras la certificación, ellos completarán una orientación de 7 semanas en el GFR para demostrar su competencia antes de unirse a sus compañeros bomberos en respuesta a las llamadas de emergencia.
