The City of Gainesville Cultural Affairs Division invites neighbors to participate in the selection process for the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Public Art Project.

The public can view proposals from the three finalist artists online and submit feedback through Friday, July 31. The proposals also will be featured in a poster exhibition at the A. Quinn Jones Museum and Cultural Center from July 17-31. Public comments will be considered by the Art in Public Places Trust during the final selection process.

Earlier this year, the city solicited proposals for a 5-foot-by-10-foot public artwork to enhance a section of fence between the new GPD Property and Evidence Building at Northwest Sixth Street and the adjacent rails-to-trails multiuse pathway. The call for artists sought proposals that combine design with functional infrastructure and reflect the history, character and values of the Gainesville community.

Opening reception for the poster exhibition:

When: 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 17

Where: A. Quinn Jones Museum and Cultural Center, 1013 NW Seventh Ave.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to learn about each artist's vision and share feedback that will help inform the selection process. Following the reception, the exhibition will remain on display through July 31. The center is open from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and by appointment.

Community engagement is a key part of Gainesville’s Art in Public Places program. The GPD Public Art Project reflects Gainesville’s ongoing commitment to integrating art into public spaces, celebrating creativity and creating spaces that celebrate Gainesville’s history and identity.
