City of Gainesville leaders are hosting a Sister City delegation from Rzeszów, Poland at City Hall, during which Mayor Lauren Poe will present a ceremonial check totaling $20,860 raised locally this spring in support of Rzeszów’s relief efforts to aid Ukrainian refugees.

The funds were raised for the City of Rzeszów Relief Fund during The Amazing Give to support the emergency needs of refugees, and to aid stabilization and relocation efforts. Rzeszów is located in southeastern Poland, less than 40 miles from the border with Ukraine, and has welcomed hundreds of thousands Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion in February. Its airport is a hub for military supplies arriving from the west.

During the visit to City Hall, the delegates from Rzeszów also will learn more about the Gainesville Immigrant Neighbor Inclusion initiative, a communitywide effort supporting immigrant advocacy at the local level.

Gainesville and Rzeszów forged a Sister City relationship in 2011 to promote the exchange of ideas and foster collaboration between public and private sectors in both municipalities.
