Gainesville honors local historic preservation champions

This year’s recipients of the City of Gainesville’s Historic Preservation Awards celebrated their love of Gainesville and shared the passions that drive their work. The fourth annual Historic Preservation Awards ceremony honored six recipients whose dedication to the field spans decades.

City Beautification Board honors area businesses and organizations

At a recent ceremony, the Gainesville City Beautification Board recognized 10 local businesses and organizations with the 2025 Gainesville Beautification Awards for their outstanding efforts in improving the city’s urban environment. The recipients were selected across four categories: Commercial & Community Hubs, Community Initiatives (Non-Profit), Public Amenities, and Public Art.

Gainesville updates grant program to support larger downtown events

The Downtown Events Grant Program successfully launched last fall through a pilot program that awarded amounts as large as $5,000 to 12 local businesses and organizations for event-related expenses such as advertising, equipment or facilities rental, entertainment, etc. Events supported through the program included the Flying Pig Parade 2024; Tu Fiesta Radio Festival 2024, etc.

City hosts Summer Blitz to connect youth with enrichment programs

Commission moves to place Florida Theater on local registry

To help revitalize Gainesville’s 97-year-old Florida Theater, the Gainesville City Commission voted to add the landmark to the Local Register of Historic Places. The designation is expected to receive final approval with a second reading on Feb. 20, opening the door to opportunities for grants, tax credits and other incentives to support a much-needed restoration of the historic property.

Black History Month 2025

Gainesville officials to present Key to the City to Willy Chirino

Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward will present a Key to the City to renowned Cuban-American singer/songwriter Willy Chirino Saturday for his outstanding contributions during his 50 years in music and for helping raise Gainesville’s profile internationally as a music destination. The salsa musician performs for the first time in Gainesville at Bo Diddley Plaza after the Key to the City presentation.
