Tom Petty Park sports new pickleball courts, seating, lighting

Eight new, pickleball courts at Tom Petty Park are now open to the public. Completed renovations at the municipal park also include new seating areas, a multiuse trail, new landscaping, shade structures and a stormwater pond. Visitors are advised work is still underway, and portions of the courts may close at times as crews complete final steps.

Gainesville tree canopy expands with the help of volunteers

City of Gainesville earns LEED Gold for sustainability, resilience

The City of Gainesville has earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), joining a select group of 56 LEED Gold cities across the country. City staff completed a rigorous application process to score 70 of 110 points on its first LEED for Cities application, surpassing both Certified and Silver levels.

Gainesville celebrates renovations to Duval Nature Park

City leaders and area neighbors gathered at Duval Nature Park during a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 20 to mark the completion of renovations that began in early March. Created around the sight of a stormwater management facility in 2010, the park features several new improvements while maintaining its original environmental purpose to keep local neighborhoods safe from flooding.

Gainesville receives federal award to fund new EV charging stations

The funds will enable the city to build 47 new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the area; the dual-port stations would be capable of charging as many as 94 EVs at the same time. In the coming months, the city will secure a private contractor for the project. Following design and site improvement work in 2026, installation of the charging stations should begin in 2027.

Gainesville begins spraying to control rising numbers after H. Debby

Local mosquito populations already on the rise prior to the arrival of Hurricane Debby are finding new breeding grounds in standing water left behind by the storm. Last week, the City of Gainesville’s Mosquito Control division began spraying for mosquitoes throughout Gainesville and are expected to continue spraying this week.

Gainesville celebrates the opening of the new Lincoln Yard Park

With community leaders and neighbors in attendance, the City of Gainesville marked the opening of the new Lincoln Yard Park with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Six months in the making, park construction began in January and was completed in time for summer strolls around the park.

University of Florida researchers begin Gainesville tree inventory

For the next two years, a University of Florida team will take inventory of trees on municipal rights-of-way, as well as developed areas of City of Gainesville parks, and complete an ecological analysis of Gainesville’s public and private urban forest.
