City of Gainesville staff work to make UF Homecoming weekend a success

The action begins late Thursday and early Friday, as Public Works crews start installing barricades and signage along 27 streets in advance of Gator Gallop and the UF Homecoming Parade. GPD and GFR provide security and emergency response during the events. Afterward, the city’s sweepers, dump trucks and loaders clear debris and reopen streets. The entire process begins anew on game day.

Caffey, Garilus named grand marshals of this year's parade

The City of Gainesville has named nationally acclaimed theatrical creator, producer and director Marion J. Caffey and award-winning saxophonist Emmanuel Garilus as co-grand marshals of the 2025 A Very GNV Holiday Parade. The parade will also include a special appearance by Star Center Theatre in celebration of its silver anniversary.

City Hall Plaza renovation starts Tuesday; Building access unaffected

City of Gainesville earns LEED Gold for sustainability, resilience

The City of Gainesville has earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), joining a select group of 56 LEED Gold cities across the country. City staff completed a rigorous application process to score 70 of 110 points on its first LEED for Cities application, surpassing both Certified and Silver levels.

City firefighters train for water rescues at municipal Pool

Dwight H. Hunter Pool served as the training site for Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) firefighters to practice water rescues. Using a car prop to simulate a submerged vehicle, the first responders took turns locating and freeing an underwater “victim,” swimming out with a rope to retrieve them or reeling them to safety from shore.

Refurbished historic elevator at Hippodrome Theatre reopens to public

The manually operated elevator returned to service after a faithful restoration of its early 20th-century craftsmanship. It had been in operation since 1911 in the U.S. Post Office and Federal Courthouse building (now home to the Hippodrome Theatre) before being taken out of service in 2024 due to safety concerns.
