Step into a fun family-oriented park. Kids, aged five to twelve, will have a great time playing on the partially shaded playground—and scaling the rock wall if they’re feeling bold. Facility and Park Reservations
The Porters neighborhood is a historically black neighborhood and is named after Dr. Watson Porter, who sold the land exclusively to black families more than a century ago. Dr. Porter was born in Nova Scotia in1839 and enlisted as a surgeon in the Union army at the beginning of the civil war. He was assigned to the post in Gainesville and served as Assistant Surgeon, 3rd United States Colored Infantry. He stayed in Gainesville after the war and prospered. Watson Porter encouraged the neighborhood families to plant and cultivate gardens to become self-sufficient. He is interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville.
