City Hall Plaza

The recently renovated City Hall Plaza is located at 200 E. University Avenue on the corner of SE First Street and East University Avenue in the heart of historic downtown Gainesville. The plaza is available to rent throughout the year.

The City Hall Plaza reopened May 2026 with a ribbon-cutting that marked the total transformation of the municipal space, a project approved by the Gainesville City Commission in 2023 to address ongoing maintenance issues associated with the plaza’s two original ponds, built in the 1960s.

Renovations to the existing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hall of Fame Garden and the Sister Cities Monument Garden included new terraced seating and improved landscaping. In the southwest corner of the plaza is a triangular inlay of rainbow-colored bricks repurposed from downtown crosswalks that were removed in 2025 to comply with Florida DOT safety standards.
