Overview

Household appliances are collected by appointment and separate from your weekly Bulk Waste Collection. Appliances are generally collected on the same day as your regular garbage collection day. There are no additional costs for this collection service. Only residential homes serviced through the City of Gainesville's Residential Curbside Service Program are eligible for this service.

Appliance collection requires an appointment. Be sure to submit your appliance recycling collection appointment request no later than Noon the day before your regular collection day. Appointment requests made after Noon the day before your regular collection day will occur the following week.

  • Properly prepare your appliance(s) for collection by removing all items, such as food, water, dishes, pots, pans, and clothes.
  • Remove doors or tape doors closed on refrigerators and oven doors to prevent accidental lock-ins.
  • Never puncture Freon tanks in refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioners.

Make Your Appliance Collection Appointment

After making your appliance collection appointment:

  • Place your appliance curbside for collection by 7 AM on your regular collection day. Appliance must be placed curbside for collection to occur. Appliance set back on driveways, in carports or in garages will not be collected.
  • Allow at least 4 feet of clearance between your garbage cart and any appliances set out for collection.
  • Appliances collection appointments should be completed on your regular collection day (same day as your garbage day).
  • Appointment requests made after Noon the day before your regular collection day will occur the following week.

3 Steps To Properly Prepare Your Appliances For Recycling Pickup

All appliances eventually tire out and need to be replaced, but that doesn’t have to mean the end of their usefulness. The metal in ovens, washers, dryers, refrigerators, and other appliances can be recycled to make new products - maybe even a new appliance.

graphic of an open refrigerator with the door open with big red x across the whole graphic Please follow these 3 steps to prepare your appliance for collection:

  1. Clean it out! Be sure to remove all food items from fridges & freezers and take any clothes out from washers & dryers. Don’t forget to also empty out pots, pans, and dishes from ovens and dishwashers before setting them out for collection.
  2. Remove doors from fridges, freezers & ovens. If you cannot remove the doors, please tape or tie them closed. Removing doors will help to prevent accidental lock-ins from children playing in the area.
  3. Never puncture Freon tanks in fridges, freezers, or air conditioners. Freon should only be removed by certified technicians. When improperly captured, Freon makes its way into our atmosphere, causing the depletion of Earth’s ozone layer.

City of Gainesville residents with curbside refuse services are eligible for appliance collection at no additional costs. However, collection is made by appointment only. To make your appliance collection appointment call 352-334-2330 or submit an appointment request online at gainesvillefl.gov/Recycle.

Donating Your Furniture & Working Appliances

Furniture and working appliances in good condition can be donated to one of many local reuse outlets. Items can be dropped off or, in some cases, collected from your home by a charity or non-profit. For a full list of local reuse outlets, visit our Zero Waste Wizard.
