Gainesville events raise awareness about gun violence

Gainesville will join communities across the nation to raise awareness about gun violence, amplify the voices of survivors and build community as part of Gun Violence Awareness Month in June. The events are free and open to the public.
When: Saturday, May 31, 9-11 a.m.
Where: Squirrel Ridge Park, 1603 SW Williston Road
In partnership with Alachua County Community Support Services, the Alachua County Crisis Center, the Community Gun Violence Prevention Alliance and fellow community partners, the memorial event will offer opportunities for reflection, remembrance and healing.
Gun Violence Awareness Day Proclamation
When: Thursday, June 5, 5:30 p.m.
Where: City Hall Auditorium, 200 E. University Ave.
At the beginning of the evening session of the June 5 city commission meeting, Mayor Ward and the Gainesville City Commission will designate Friday, June 6 as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Gainesville to honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors.
When: Friday, June 6, 8 p.m.
Where: Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center, 1028 14th St.
Neighbors are invited to wear orange clothing to this event, scheduled before the start of Midnight Basketball. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is annually scheduled the first Friday in June and #WearOrange is the official hashtag of the Wear Orange national movement to stop gun violence.
